A Mauritian company is a $US1.3 million victim of Mexican scammers.

15/11/2024

The letter "i" was replaced with an "l" in an email address. This is the method that ill-intentioned people would have used to carry out a financial fraud of Rs 62 million.

This sum of money, which belongs to the Mauritian company Citrus Processing Mauritius Ltd, whose financial director is Open Skye, was allegedly stolen by a fraudulent transfer from the company's bank account at AfrAsia Bank to a banking institution based in Mexico.

In a complaint filed at the Camp-de-Masque police station on the afternoon of Monday, November 11, the financial director explains that he was warned by a colleague, at around 11 a.m. that day, that an amount of USD 1,386,146, which was in the account of Citrus Processing Mauritius Ltd, had been transferred to that of a company called Citrus International through a Mexican bank, Citibanamex.

According to the complainant, the transaction was to be carried out by email, and the alleged scammers were able to carry out their plan by discreetly changing the spelling of his email address.

At this stage, we know that the police have already opened an investigation.
