FCC questions former director of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) about fund misuse

14/05/2025

Arvind Bundhun, former director of the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA),

  • Is being questioned under warning as part of an investigation into alleged fund misuse.
  • Stands accused of misusing an MTPA credit card for personal purchases, a serious allegation that has raised many eyebrows.

Reports indicated that these questionable expenses, amounting to an estimated Rs 500,000, occurred between 2018 and 2024, notably in Duty-Free shops in Mauritius and abroad.

The FCC has been presented with compelling documentation that could potentially lead to serious repercussions for Bundhun as they conduct a preliminary investigation.

If the evidence collected proves substantial, he may soon be called upon to explain his actions regarding these troubling claims.

Adding fuel to the fire, it has emerged that Bundhun allegedly received per diem payments for his trips abroad. Per diems are intended to cover essential travel expenses such as meals, accommodation, and other related costs.

  • Between July 2023 and November 2024, he pocketed a staggering $47,000—nearly Rs 2.2 million.

The investigation is ongoing, with further developments expected in the coming days.

Tourism Minister Richard Duval vocally condemned these practices in early January, claiming they have persisted for the last six years.

Particular scrutiny has fallen on one hotel establishment, whose manager reportedly secured advantages to promote Mauritius on the international stage, only to use these resources to highlight his own business for personal gain. This manager is also said to have received payment from the MTPA.
