Is this identification document AI-generated or real ❓❓
10/01/2025
Are those in charge of non-face-to-face onboarding able to tell if an identification document [ID] document is AI or Real 🫣
THE TEST - Is this identification document AI-generated or real ❓❓
THE ANSWER
- Neither the document nor the background in this image are actual!
- This is a fully AI-generated ID document with astonishing quality - even down to details like the smartphone’s shadow on the passport and the table.
THE PROBLEM WE FACE
- Emerging services on the Dark Web are creating alarming opportunities for fraudsters.
- These tools don’t just generate one deepfake image - they produce multiple ones from a simple list of PII, paving the way for synthetic fraud on an unprecedented scale.
- Modern KYC services and assessment procedures must adapt to and account for these advancements in fraud technology.
- Staying ahead requires constant vigilance and innovation.
THE SOLUTION
- Many wouldn't be able to tell if the above is accurate or AI based on this image; they should cross-reference with a lot of other information and data
- Some ideas are below to help.
HERE ARE SOME WAYS TO IDENTIFY GENERATED IDS ⬇️
- ✅ OSINT SUPPORT.
- Does this person exist on any platforms other than trying to gain access to yours? That includes social media and public records.
- ✅ INTERNAL INFORMATION.
- If a person is submitting information from one jurisdiction but their logins show they are logging in the middle of the night, that is a good sign that this ID is phoney.
- ✅ MOVE
- Perform liveness tests and ask for multiple submissions of them holding the ID on different days
- ✅ JURISDICTIONAL RESTRICTIONS.
- In certain countries, smiling is prohibited in a passport, and others don't allow wearing eyeglasses.
- ✅ METADATA.
- The reality is most ID submissions will be made using a phone with specific data that you can check with tools. The lack of such data is a huge red flag
- ✅ OLD SCHOOL REVERSE IMAGE MATCH.
- Let's face it: darkweb vendors aren't exactly going to sell this ID once, and you may be seeing this ID fraudulently popping up on other sites or forums
- ✅ TO CLEAN
- There is such a thing as too perfect. I know passports don't get used that often, but if they are too clean with barely any fold lines or wear and tear (after 7 years in this case), that may be a sign of AI generation
