Republika Srpska is registered under the UK “FOREIGN INFLUENCE REGISTRATION SCHEME” and is now sanctioned by OFAC
18/08/2025
The Foreign Influence Registration Scheme (FIRS) came into force on 1 July 2025.
- FIRS protects the safety and interests of the UK by improving the understanding of activity taking place in the UK at the instruction of a foreign state or certain foreign state‑controlled organisations.
- You must register with FIRS if you or your organisation meet certain conditions.
- Failure to register such activities is a criminal offence under UK law.
Republika Srpska Registers Under UK’s Foreign Influence Registration Scheme (FIRS)
- Republika Srpska iso among the first foreign entities to register under the UK’s Foreign Influence Registration Scheme (FIRS), which came into effect on 1 July 2025 under the National Security Act 2023
- FIRS is designed to increase transparency around foreign influence in UK politics. It has two tiers:
- Political Influence Tier: Requires registration if a foreign power directs activities aimed at influencing UK political decisions.
- Enhanced Tier: Applies to entities linked to high-risk states (currently Russia and Iran) and covers a broader range of activities.
- Republika Srpska’s registration suggests it may be involved in activities within the UK that could be interpreted as political influence, such as lobbying or public communications directed by a foreign government.
Republika Srpska Hires US Law Firm to Challenge OFAC Sanctions
- The government of Republika Srpska, one of the two entities within Bosnia and Herzegovina, has retained a U.S. law firm to contest sanctions imposed by the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
- These sanctions target individuals and entities linked to Milorad Dodik, the president of Republika Srpska, for alleged corruption and destabilising activities in the region
- The legal move is part of a broader strategy by Republika Srpska to push back against international pressure and reputational damage stemming from these designations.
- OFAC has previously sanctioned Dodik and several associated companies, citing their role in undermining the Dayton Peace Agreement and perpetuating corruption.
