UK suspends export licences to Israel
04/09/2024
3 September 2024 - In a written statement to Parliament, the UK Foreign Secretary (David Lammy) has announced the suspension of certain export licences to Israel.
“Around 30” of the 350 export licences granted to Israel have been suspended including.
- Aircraft components and
- Components that facilitate air to ground targeting.
Lammy emphasised that this “is not a blanket ban” nor is it “an arms embargo” and the government will continually review its position.
The UK’s Export Control Joint Unit (“ECJU”) has published a notice summarising the licences suspended and the impact on exporters, who will be contacted by the ECJU to confirm the decision.
The ECJU has also amended the following open general licences:
- open general trade control licence for category C goods;
- open general trade control licence trade and transportation: small arms and light weapons.
Licences unaffected by the suspension include those for items
- Not used by the Israeli Defence Forces in the current Israel-Gaza conflict (e.g. training equipment) and
- For items for civilian use.
Lammy’s statement also drew attention to the UK’s recent designation of Iranian individuals and entities, some of whom were alleged to be attempting to destabilise Israel
